Anjaw, Dibang Valley cut off; Namsai, East Siang hit by floods

[ Karyir Riba ]

ITANAGAR, Aug 10: Anjaw district is cut off from rest of the state. Several stretches on Tezu-Hawai road has been hit by landslides in the last two days severely hampering connectivity of the border district.

Meanwhile, the incessant downpour since the past few days has led to the collapse of the bailey bridge over the Eze River here today, disconnecting the Hunli-Desali Block under Lower Dibang Valley district, and Dibang Valley district from the rest of the country.

In yet another incident, a section of the under construction bridge over the Chipu River, which would connect Lower Dibang Valley district with Lohit district, has also collapsed on Thursday. As per the BRO, the construction agency, the flaw occurred because the flash flood caused by the river following the continuous rainfall, washed away the 'staging' of the pier, which was still under construction.

The BRO informed that they had identified the damage in the staging on the previous day and had made arrangements to take remedial measures. However, just as labourers were deployed to work on it today, at around 7 am, the staging was washed away, bringing the entire section of the bridge crashing down.

A labourer who was injured in the process was immediately shifted to the GREF Hospital at Tezu, informed the BRO.

Reportedly, the bridge which was estimated for completion by October 2017 will now be delayed by a month or two.

The constant rain has resulted in an alarming rise in the water level of the rivers here. Many areas in the town, and adjoining villages, are suffering from water logging and overflowing, as the rain seems to be ceaseless.

Further, the low-lying areas of Namsai district have been submerged by flood water, following incessant rainfall since the last few days.

Villages of Dirak Miri, Lekang Gohaingaon, Rajabeel, Mokrun and Nongtaw Khamti are reportedly the worst affected, with water of the Noa-Dihing River, other rivers and their tributaries in the district flowing just below the danger level.

Damage reports of dwelling houses, granaries, cattle sheds are also pouring in, and around 756 people from 105 houses under Lekang circle have been severely affected by flood water.

Reports of massive soil erosion along with losses of private properties are also being received from various pockets of the district.  Around 200 hectors of cultivated land, especially paddy fields are submerged by flood water. However, the actual loss can be ascertained only after the flood water recedes.

The Namsai District Administration has directed all agencies concerned to keep a close look out on the flood situation and to ensure all necessary precautionary measure to avert any untoward incident.

Necessary relief materials are being provided to the affected people by the District Administration, while people residing in river bank areas have been alerted.

While no loss of human life has been reported, the Namsai District Administration has imposed complete ban on fishing.

Meanwhile, incessant rain also triggered landslides at two different points on the Koyu-Kora stretch of road under 36th Nari-Koyu Assembly Constituency, cutting off Koyu circle from all surface communication.

Flash flood also hit Silluk Village under Mebo circle of East Siang this afternoon. Siluk River flooded many homes and villagers were seen busy keeping their possession in safer places. However, there was no report of any casualty.

The Siku Bridge which connects Pasighat with Roing has also been reportedly washed away by the flood.

Leporiang ZPM, Nabam Tara informed that the state government has not taken up any action to clear the blockade on the PMGSY road from Leporiang to Pape Panchayat, which remained cut off for the last three months due to landslides.

Teaching staff and students of Government Residential School, Pape Sango have been facing  severe hardship as  there  is no transportation of ration items due to road blockade, he said.

BJP ends marriage with PPA in state executive meet

ITANAGAR, Aug 10: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has parted ways with its North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) partner, the People's Party of Arunachal (PPA).

The official announcement towards it was made on Thursday by state BJP President Tapir Gao during the state executive meeting of the BJP. NEDA Convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma passed on the decision of the central BJP leaders to break alliance to Gao, who made the announcement.

In a release, the BJP informed that Sarma was to attend the meeting and make the announcement, but could not reach Itanagar due to inclement weather.

Meanwhile, the PPA has stated that it is yet to receive an official communication.

"Till now we have not received any official communication in this regard. Our leaders are meeting tomorrow and we will react after that. We had already written to BJP President Amit Shah and the NEDA Convenor placing our condition on running the coalition," said PPA leader Kaling Jerang.

The breakdown in relation between two parties is not surprising considering the fact that PPA leader Takam Pario had rebelled against Chief Minister Pema Khandu and almost brought down his government. It is reported that even after Pema Khandu joined the BJP to form the saffron government, Pario remained in touch with certain BJP MLAs who are not happy with Khandu. Sensing danger, Pema reportedly pressed party high command to break the alliance with PPA.

Meanwhile, addressing the state executive meeting of the BJP, state BJP President Tapir Gao urged all the delegates to actively counter the baseless rumours being thrown about by the opposition parties and rumour mongers about instability of the Pema Khandu Government.

Assuring the gathering that there is no threat to the current state government, he reassured the delegates that it is not the principle and policy of the BJP to change government in mid-term.

"Till today there have been no such instances and it is very unlikely that BJP will break this tradition", he said, and urged all present to rest assured, and exhorted Chief Minister Pema Khandu to focus on developmental work  for the benefit of the people of the state without any trepidation.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu remarked that there is a better understanding of the ideology of party legislators and party cadres, who joined the BJP recently, and opined that from now there will be better governance based on BJP ideologies.

Pema said that everyone, including the Chief Minister has to perform or perish. Every two months, there is revision of performance of chief ministers by the Prime Minister and accordingly everyone has to be accountable, he said.

Submitting a memorandum to the Union Minister in New Delhi on Wednesday, Ering said, "it is reported that only a length of nine kilometer out of the 35 km has been considered in the Annual Plan NH (O) 2017-18, which implies that the ministry is going for a phase-wise double-laning of this road".

"Phase-wise double-laning will prolong the initiation of all-weather connectivity in this important road which will, in turn, hamper the anti-insurgency operations of the security forces and will also extend the present distress of the road-users who depend on this life-line for their livelihood", Ering said

The Khonsa-Hukanjuri road in the eastern sector of Arunachal Pradesh connects Tirap, Changlang and Longding  districts with the rest of the country.

Ering also appealed to the Union Minister for formal declaration of 44-km Margherita - Changlang road and Tezu to Chapakhowa (59 Km) road as national highways.

Put  statutory health warning on all soft drink

Dear Editor,

Sugar consumption is continuously increasing in the world, passing from 5.1 kg/capita at the beginning of the 20th century to an average of 24 kg/capita in 2014. A big contrast is observed between developing and developed countries.  With the globalization of the economy and the increase of free trade among nations, sugar has been rapidly commercializing as a cheap available product. Significant part of sugar use comes from soft drink consumption  that  include sugar-sweetened, high-sugar categories carbonates, juice and sports energy drinks, and the sugar substitutes with colorings preservatives and other ingredients. With the diversity of meals and recipes, sweet taste is more and more controlling the nutrition of millions of people around the globe. Although sugar consumption is essential for the body; however, soft drink consumption must be regulated. High sugar intake increases the chance of obesity and obesity related ailments, diabetes, cancer, abnormally impacts mental behavior; and has negative impact on the local environment. WHO recommends a daily maximum of 10% of calories from free sugar.

Sugar is being added to all dishes and drinks creating nutrition imbalance among the consumers. US show one of highest sugar consumption per capita. Big multi-national food companies like Coca-cola and PepsiCo spent 7.27 billion US$ in advertisement in 2013. The omnipresence of these companies in the strategic sector of nutrition is changing the availability, affordability, and desirability of soft drink; thereby reshaping sugar consumption patterns across the globe.

The economic agreements between nations in North America (NAFTA) resulted in the preferential elimination of tariffs on soft-drink imports. Furthermore, the stronger protections for US investors, is giving companies free pass to reshape world nutrition pattern from diversity to a uniform, unhealthy and unbalanced diet.

Significant correlation has been established between sugar consumption and the annual rate of depression. Comparing the effect of coffee and soft drinks on depression of US citizens, frequent consumption of sweetened beverages (1-4 cans/day) can slightly increase the risk of depression; while coffee consumption slightly lowers the risk of depression. Furthermore, an addition of sweeteners in beverage, coffee or teas increases the depression risk.

A study on UK based soft drink industry identified five sectors (packaging, ingredients, manufacturing, waste management, and transport) on greenhouse gas emission (GHG) with large impact in the environment. Based on their findings, carbonated drinks in the UK produced over 1.5 million tons of CO2 eq. greenhouse gas (GHG) per year; which represented 13% of the GHG emissions from the whole food and drink sector in 2010. This is equivalent to the emissions generated from burning 3390 barrels of oil which contribute to global warming that affect the survival of ecosystem. Furthermore, the use of artificial sweeteners in soft drink is raising concerns because of the fact that these products pass undigested and end up in stored water.

Presence of several artificial sweeteners in the aquatic environment has been documented around the globe. As a consequence, aquatic organisms are subjected to long-term exposures which could have a negative impact on the natural ecological systems. The large amount of unmetabolized artificial sweetener in rivers are likely to negatively impact the local environment, natural biodiversity and endanger several aquatic organisms. The negative relation between frequent soft drink consumption and prevalence to diseases is a serious issue from the perspective of public health perspective ad hence needs immediate attention. It is therefore important to impose a ban on soft drink advertisements and to put a statutory health warning on all soft drink bottles and cans for making public aware of the risks associated with soft drink consumption.

CM musical Chair will hamper and not aid

Dear Editor,

It is a disturbing thing to read of the demand for resignation of the present Arunachal Chief Minister!

If we are being dragged into the Arunachal CM Musical Chair again, it will hamper and not aid our State.

In this short span of time, since the days of former CM Lt. D. Khandu, we have witnessed turbulence in the leadership circles of our State! It appears to a common man that the top elected leaders of our State are more interested in Power politics; aligning and dis-aligning themselves in various equations while the business of the State remain in shambles!

So many developmental projects are left unattended. Hydro-power Projects rot. Hospitals lack doctors. Schools lack teachers. Dispensaries are empty. Unemployment is on the rise. Social and economic issues are not settled. Houses continue to burn. Roads continue to form fish ponds. Job seekers continue in dismay. And the list goes on and on. And all these happen while the leaders of our State worry about themselves, thinking about toppling and raising CM after CM!

My impression about present CM Pema is positive. I think he is energetic, and a decisive leader. He is sincere in his responsibilities. He should be given enough space to prove himself. He has the pressure to maintain the standard of his father as former CM and even take things further for better. He seems to stand at a crucial time. There are huge issues facing the State. The State politics is in the transition period. The merging of State's 'old' and newly arrived BJP must be tricky enough. His hands must be full!

It would not be unfair, at the same time to say, if the claims of the APCC is true that a certain Bureaucrat at the top of the system is erring, that must be dealt with. And if the charges of APCC against the CM himself is true, then the CM must confess it and repent. And if the charges are false, let honorable CM call a press conf and lay out his case for all to hear. Let there be transparency.

I would appeal to our elected leaders to think of the common people in your constituencies! Think of their issues, their struggles, their letters and memorandums submitted to you over the years! Think of your promises to them! Think of the finance you 'sanctioned' for them in public meetings, but are not given as yet. Think of the benefits that could be theirs. If you would only stop to think of the amount of responsibilities you have for the development of people you  represent, you will not have time to scheme or plot. You would be consumed in service and dedication! You will not be able to make yourself as the center of your decisions; rather you would be making your people as the center of your service!

Anyway, when the day comes, when you will no longer be the MLA/Minister/CM and so on, the good deeds you have done for the good of the voiceless, the common man will continue to bear witness to your greatness.  Rich people are easily forgotten, but a merciful person is cherished long after he / she is gone. Service is an opportunity.

Let us do it now! Tomorrow may be too late to try.

Yours,

Aphu A Ngwazah,

Miao
